nocturnal thoughts

My husband is snoring so loudly and my brain is whirring with a book proposal (I'm surprised there is space for this in my mind in fact as I am working on a pitch for two novels and writing a third and a graphic novel.). It is so exciting when you get ideas in the night. I put my ring on the wrong finger to remind myself of something, went to sleep and now can't remember what it was. I feel so well in the night and so awful during the day, I must be turning into an owl or a badger or something.… Continue

fairy cakes and submissions

Spurred on by Christine of Post Office blog entry fame, I have spent the night preparing a submission to Mslexia. Also making apricot jam fairy cakes because I was suddenly wide awake (my husband gave a snore worthy of a steam train) and needed to know what would happen if you put lots of jam into a fairy cake mixture. Nigella puts morello cherry jam into chocolate cake and she's no fatter than me, so I thought why not Asda apricot jam in fairy cakes. Now shattered. Must consider move to other s… Continue

50 for curry

Why am I yet again emailing and Accent Pressing at 3.55am? This time because I have 50 people for Sunday lunch and I guess my body said "Quick! There must be loads to do!" even though I've done most of them. My friend says I minght need a license to cook this much curry, and considering I don't have a driving license at the moment I'm not sure the CVLA (curry and vegetable licensing agency) would grant me one so I'm keeping quiet. I have also made 50 fairy cakes and let my 3 year old ice them. T… Continue

vegetable patch update

Yesterday we spent £260.82 in B&Q on wooden posts to build up the marsh where we're going to grow vegetables. How many potatoes will we need to grow to recoup this loss? Interesting thought. But in fact it's the Felicity Kendall thing rather than the savings that has me yearning to do it. Next door, btw, have just announced they're getting chickens. The street may yet turn into Cardiff's first middle-class-new-build-estate-sellf-sufficient-cooperative.

Good luck with everything and let me know how it goes. Yes still working on the Aussie book - plus lots other things and kids stories. Doing a few assignments with Writers Bureau (non fiction articles) , had a couple of reader letters published and poss a couple more. A.P. read some of Kangaroo land so was chuffed to be asked but didn't fit with their titles - it's a start tho!! Negative side: get in a muddle with verbs haha!

Hi Romy
I like that picture of the woman gazing through the window. I used to have it on the wall in my dreary basement office where I worked some years ago. I hope you don't mind but I've put it into one of my blog (other blog) postings. I should have asked first but I didn't think you'd mind. Also (with my ineptitude at such things) I didn't think I'd be able to figure out how to transfer it to my blog - I was experimenting and to my surprise it worked.

Hi Romy,

Thank you so much for your welcome message. I'm trying to make progress with a children's book and working towards a Foundation Degree in Professional Writing at Greenwich Uni, but, have to confess, will do anything I can to avoid getting down to some work. I expect you'll find me posting on this site quite often, hoping to get some tips on how to make progress!

The temperatures in the low twenties, the sun's shining and it's 5pm here in Spain. I've just finished a short story entry for the H Rider Haggard comp and will let it gestate a while before doing a final edit. I'm also waiting on the first chapters of two novels with Accent, fingers crossed. I'm midway through a romantic thriller set in present-day Tenerife and the words are starting to flow. As long as that flow continues I will go with it; if there's a hiatus, I'll turn to either my new private eye novel or my fourth western. I agree, there never is a 'last' draft - there's always something to improve. But you've got to let go and move on; sounds a bit like a parent...
Nik (author of 'Pain Wears No Mask', not Accent, sorry!)

Just saying hi again. Knowing when to stop editing 'last' draft is always a problem for me. Now that the publication date of my memoir has been put back to August, I'm waiting for comments from Hazel's husband about some slight additions I've made at his suggestion.
