TWO OCCUPATIONS

My working life is neatly divided between the roles of paid listener and unpaid scribe (unpaid that is until the first royalties of my novel start dribbling, I mean flooding, in!) The two jobs share certain things in common, not least the ability to conduct both activities from the confines of my own home; a mixed blessing, for while travel costs may be low, I really do need to get out more! More significantly, both occupations are essentially about storytelling.

Therapy is such a grand setting for drama, with its artificial and closely defined structure, the absurdities and pomposity of its language, the small rituals and paraphernalia of the therapy room, and its mercurial capacity for healing and growth, I wanted to tell a fictional story about the conundrum of therapy, such a strange and intriguing occupation (that bares more than a passing comparison with prostitution) in which money is exchanged for the kind of intimate attention one would normally expect to find only in a close, personal relationship for free.

I am fascinated by the interface between our personal and professional selves, and how each impact upon the other, and fiction seemed a far better way to explore these issues and bring them to a wider audience, than by writing a dry academic paper for a professional journal.

My central character, Patrick Chime, is a talented therapist but a terrible husband, and when a gun-toting former client and social misfit, obsessed by porn and the artist Degas, walks into his office, Patrick’s world starts to unravel as he’s forced to tackle his own personal demons. The focus of the narrative alternates between Patrick’s sessions with his clients, and glimpses into his home life, where the impact of two powerful secrets slowly unfolds. And at the end, Patrick is left musing on where he is more genuine, in his therapy chair, or in real life.”

LISTENING IN a novel of therapy, and real life is published by Accent Press on 6th April 2009.

Posing in the window

Just back from a much needed holiday down in deepest Cornwall where the sun shone, the lanes were narrow and the hedgerows festooned with wild flowers, and best of all... a week with no clients and no computer. Took a detour on the way home, stopping off in Poole to do a 'Meet The Author' book signing at Waterstones. This was my first daytime signing (having previously done several evening events at other Waterstones preceded by a talk, reading extracts etc. I'd enjoyed those, but they were rath… Continue

DIRTY LINEN

(These meandering thoughts triggered by the prospect of my novel at last being published)

Easter Ross, by Donald Hamilton Fraser

I always feel a certain sympathy for the knicker-thief, his heart in hock to the fine lines of women's undergarments dancing so tantasingly upon th… Continue

In Dreams

Well, I’ve just received word that the long short story I submitted wasn’t one of the final eight selected. They published my entry in last year’s collection so I had high hopes. The email said they received several hundred entries, implying I shouldn’t feel too bad. I don’t feel ‘bad’, just disappointed. There’s a world of difference.

I’ve been moved by some of the blogs posted here by other writers, some published, many not. I feel a connection, as the struggle to find the courage and audacit… Continue

Thaw and thoughts...

A frost-free morning up here on the edge of the Pennine moors, the first in three weeks, and a brilliant sun to boot. Pure coincidence, of course, but I prefer to think that mother nature was smiling kindly on the funeral of a rather special lady. Her name was Helen, she was 67 and had spent the last few months struggling with lung cancer, although in the end, it was her heart that gave out. She was a mother to many in various ways, and a proud and loving grandmother, too. But to me, she was jus… Continue

Hi Kevin, I'm glad you had a good holiday, and welcome back. I'm pleased to hear that you liked my book. Thankyou for putting a review on Amazon and the Waterstones site: I was chuffed to bits when I saw it. Another high spot was going into Borders and finding two copies of 'The Dark Threads' on the shelf. I wanted to tug at people's sleeves and say, hey, look, I wrote that book!

I bought your book - got into it straight away. It's very good! I bought it from Accent Press in the end, plus another book - it's a great site here, and friendly so always good to support it. And Hazel asked to read Kangaroo Land after doodling on here. Didn't fit with the titles but feel so pleased a publisher read it at long last! She recommended Summersdale so will try that when ready. Have a good weekend! And cannot wait to get back to your book!!

Hi Kevin, It was really lovely to meet you at Waterstones last night. I very much enjoyed your talk, followed by the interesting discussion. I hope your book promoting continues to go well and that you're enjoying it. My husband Ian enjoyed your book and talk too (and take no notice of him going off about Sheffield United!).

I thoroughly enjoyed your novel. Engrossing to the end. However, just one niggly question, which I'll email you about to your private inbox later as I don't want to give away any plot details to those who haven't yet read it.

Yes, I'll be coming to your talk at Waterstones, Leeds, on Thurs 23rd, and I'm looking forward to saying 'Hello' to you.

Hi Kevin
Just want to tell you I bought your novel 'Listening In' at Waterstones in Leeds yesterday. I started reading it last night and couldn't put it down. Got back to it today and now it's all your fault that I'm neglecting husband and housework. Can't wait to see how it ends. Congrats.
