WHITBY, NORTH YORKSHIRE Whitby , an ancient North Yorkshire fishing port, is one of the places I love to draw and paint, and aAlthough there has been development for tourism, it still retains much of the original "olde-worlde" charm on the East side of the town; that is, the side upon which stands St. Mary's Church and the remains of the Monastery. Line drawing offers me an opportunity to establish just what is there and what needs to be in the final picture. We can all look, but not everyone sees. Whilst this is a stand-alone image, it is also part of my archive of images used for resources purposes on those days when it's too wet (or hot) outside for plen air working, thus it's nice to be able to fall back on self-made images as resources in the studio, rather than simply rely on a bunch of photographs, offering every minute details - too much information! HARRY
SANDSEND, (1 mile nort of Whitby), NORTH YORKSHIRE . On the way down to Sandsend, (a coastal fishing village just north of Whitby, North yorkshire) a number of vessels were waiting for the tide. The boat shown here is part of a much larger line drawing and took some time to complete - well worth the effort.HARRY
AND NOW FOR A TOUCH OF COLOUR Waiting for the Tide. A friend of mine returned from Dubai, sporting a beautiful postcard depicting boats at rest on the shoreline. Typically, I was given just three hours to produce a version of my own pic using that postcard as a resource. I added more character to the scene by providing overall warmth across the scene and highlighting the shadows at lunchtime. The original image had little in the way of shadow and highlighting! What you see here, is a snapshot from the final painting, in watercolour, completed within three hours; portion shown approx. 18" long and 12" high on pre-stretched, 300g rough paper. HARRY
THE FAIRY DELL, NORTH YORKSHIRE

Originally, this began life as a sketch, then a monochrome tonal study, then finally, a watercolour. And why ... just for the fun of it. The original is 18" tall (abt 45cm) mounted, framed and looking good on a wall! - HARRY

STAITHES, NORTH YORKSHIRE

I just can't help myself in Yorkshire, if I see a coatal scene, I just have to paint or pastel it. I can't explain why - something just "draws" me to do it (sorry for the pun!).
This small ancient village is quite unspoilt. Quaintly nestled in a cove, sheltered from the north by "The Nab" (a huge rocky ediface), calm settles to still the waters in the bay as fishermen await the next high tide. - HARRY

LOOKING UPSTREAM AT STAITHES, NORTH YORKSHIRE

A view from the mouth of the river as it meets the harbour, looking upstream at Staithes. The painfully steep bank to the right take you up through Cow Bar, to the main road (eventually) that continues south to Whitby. Cow Bar and Staithes are linked by a short bridge across the river, just in view near the lower centre of the picture. - HARRY

BLUE SKIES OVER "KATE", STAITHES, NORTH YORKSHIRE

KATE lies moored at the mouth of the harbour, watched over by a rare sapphire blue sky, resting after a hard night's fishing. - HARRY

Hi everyone,
just a quick message to say .... "I'm back!"

I've been so busy over the past months, I just haven't had time, or an internet connection in the wilds of North Yorkshire, to get on-line!

Got a lotta catching up to do between now and Christmas... then I'm off again - sorry folks, but gotta be done!

So come on - drop me a line, give me a buzz, e-mail me, whatever ..... let's get caught up.

Hi Everyone, I've just returned for the weekend from another painting trip, ("trip" - more like and expedition!) with 11 completed pieces, 5 near completion and 5 left to do (unless I add more in the meantime!). I'm only back for a few days, then I'm off again!
I'll put copies of them on here soon for comments etc.
Anyhow, I would love to see works by other artists on-line here!

Back soon - Harry

Diary Update:
Hi folks, I haven't abandoned everyone here, just been away painting and thought I should leave a message before disappearing again. So far, so good. Have done some nice work ... you'll get to see it later ... but as a result of inspiration, feel the need to dash off (I wish! - my dashing days are gone) and keepa going'.
see you soon - H

Hi Guys,
Just a diary update ... we've spent part of our half-term break near Whitby. Now for those of you who don't know, Whitby is a beautiful and delightful fishing post, not too small and not too large, with a history that precedes the Conqueror, has it's own abbey, that now lies ruined high on a desolate cliff top ... provides the best fish & chips in the world (even though I can't eat them every day [awgh!]), and is just so full of character it must be close to bursting.
So anyway, as you gather, we like this place.
But on Good Friday and Saturday it was HEAVING with visitors. I don;t know what they were diving away but I never got any! Half of the population of Yorkshire must have been there. There was an unveiled bronze statue of a naked man, well, when I say 'naked man' that's just what he is, but he's a gladiator in the full throws of murdering someone - he just has no clothes on.

Well it was wonderful ... 16 degrees C. At one point trying to navigate an ancient street (beautiful, cobble street it is) to the bottom of the abbey steps (199 of them, and all going up!) all you could see was a well-worn rug of hair, mostly brown, with blonde highlights here and there, and punctuated with ginger full-stops! (sorry - I know some fantastic ginger / auburn / red-headed people) Head after head in front and just below you. And none of it moving. Well that's ok, we'll just turn round and come back later - or so we thought! Behind was a sea of impatient trapped faces. We felt like two lemmings amongst a ... (what IS the word for a collective of lemmings?) ... well, one of those, and almost as suicidal! There'd have been more room in a sardine tin!

Anyhow, I've been catching up on some painting whilst we were away. Studio painting is fine, but being THERE is so much more ... rewarding, involved, emotional (look, I'm gonna cry!). So if you pop back here in a week, you should see some new pictures on display. As always - comments please.

Diary - Easter Monday ... Where's everyone gone?
Isn't that strange! A simple thing like a 6.5 degree C sea-fret comes for a friendly inland visit, and everyone just disappears ... like in that move ... THE FOG (James Herbert?) .. but without the bodies, just ... space ... empty space!

Anyhow, we're back for the day to top up on essential things like medicines, milk, proper quilted toilet paper ... before heading back for a couple of days whilst Kate has time off work.
Thanks for the comments thus far on the few images I've added to this group. It's not just about ME of course so feel free to send some artwork with the usual - title, name, date, medium and blur to inform of where/what it is .... you know what I mean.

TTFN back in a few days (only briefly - then away for the weekend again!)

The colour version of Waiting for Tide is impressive - very realistic. Love art. Mum paints. Think the last time I tried was back at school !!

Stonehenge! Now what I couldn't do with images from there!

Oh and Salisbury Cathedral ....

It seems we each have our jewels!

Oh I hit lucky with Wiltshire, I got Avebury, Stonehenge, Salisbury --- and the lovely Cotsolds --- not many boats though.
